stories of a journey —
simple geometries, fragments of memory,
and a number that silently cries out
all that has been left behind.
In collaboration with Terra di Tutti, this project presents a collection of objects that reflect on the challenges faced during the sea journey toward a better life. Created with two African artisans from a social enterprise, the project is rooted in their personal migration stories—from Africa, across deserts, roads, prisons, and finally the sea, before arriving in Tuscany. The simple forms and symbolic numbers embedded in the pieces evoke memories, struggles, and hope.
While the boat symbolizes the voyage across the sea, the engraving “100050 GMD” refers to a lesser-known aspect of migration: that of the stowaway. The figure corresponds to 1759€, representing the total amount of money one young man had to spend on his migration journey.
Part of the journey can be covered by bus. You buy a ticket, get on, and sit down, yet you do not always know where or when you will stop. 17496H represents the total hours spent traveling. Over time, it also contains faith, fear, the need to move elsewhere, and the courage to do so.
More important than any other means of transport are one’s legs. When the decision to leave has already been made in the mind, the legs become the protagonists of the first step. From 0 to 14737: the kilometers crossed across the world—trampled with uncertain, short and long steps, taken while running and chasing an idea of destination.
Red, as strength and resilience, without words but full of meaning and communication. The fourth object represents luck and hope. The idea of the journey ending is only an illusion. We must never stop moving, because the goal of our struggle is not a physical place to arrive at, but the kind of person we become.
